News From the January Meeting

At the GPOA meeting on Thursday January 6, 2011 we discussed the on going issue of longevity and the legality of the city’s decision to freeze it. Although the city changed the policy back in June we did not have any members negatively affected until December; when they were due for their next longevity increase. The GPOA’s legal team; along with the executive board, are currently working on this issue and we will keep you apprised of any progress that is made.

Members; Scott Kelly, Mike Rakes, Mike Montalvo and several supporters brought up the issue of pay raises and increased benefits. The aforementioned members discussed the possibility of rallying a large group of supporters to attend a future council meeting and address this issue. Although we all agree that we are under paid and over due for a raise, I feel that we need to wait for the results of the salary study and let the 2011 budget process be completed before we speak to the council. The attendance at our January meeting was excellent and I hope to see everybody in February so we can continue our dialogue on these topics.

 Stay safe,

 Ryan

Disregard Insurance Offer from IUPA

Recently our members received a mass mailing from the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) offering a “discounted” life insurance policy. Please do not respond to this offer. The Greensboro Police Officers Association has not been affiliated with IUPA in approximately a year and a half and this mailing was not authorized by GPOA and we do not endorse its content. Our attorney is currently addressing this issue with the staff of IUPA.
